Real-World IFR: Navigating Icing & IMC from Owen Sound to Oshawa
In this video, I fly the final leg of a cross-country trip from Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, returning to Oshawa (CYOO) in a Cessna. What starts as a beautiful VFR day in Owen Sound quickly transitions into challenging Instrument Meteorological Conditions (IMC) as I navigate low ceilings and potential icing levels.
What you’ll see in this flight:
IFR Flight Planning: Managing a flight plan where the icing level (5,500ft) and the lowest allowable IFR altitude (4,000ft) leave a very narrow window for safety.
ATC Communication: Listen in as I pick up my IFR clearance from Toronto Centre and coordinate altitude changes to stay clear of ice.
RNAV Approach into Oshawa: A full walkthrough of the RNAV Runway 30 approach via the DUTUT transition, including LPV glide path capture.
Pilot Decision Making: Watch how I handle the transition from VMC to solid IMC and the critical decision to ask for a descent to 4,000ft to avoid structural icing.
