If the Soviet Union had completed its nuclear-powered Ulyanovsk supercarrier, could it have defeated a US Navy Nimitz-class carrier battle group?
In this Sea Power naval warfare simulation, we explore one of the most fascinating "what if" scenarios of Cold War military history. Construction of the 75,000-ton Project 1143.7 Ulyanovsk began in 1988, but the collapse of the Soviet Union left the carrier unfinished.
But what if Ulyanovsk had been completed and entered Soviet Navy service?
We put the Soviet nuclear supercarrier to the ultimate test against a 1990s US Navy Nimitz carrier strike group in Sea Power. Ulyanovsk operates with Su-33 fighters, Sovremenny-class destroyers and Krivak II frigates, while the Nimitz carrier group fields F-14 Tomcats, F/A-18 Hornets and A-6 Intruders, supported by Ticonderoga-class cruisers and Oliver Hazard Perry-class frigates.
The battle pits some of the most powerful Cold War-era weapons against each other:
• AIM-54 Phoenix vs R-27 Alamo
• AIM-120 AMRAAM vs R-27 Alamo
• AGM-84 Harpoon vs P-700 anti-ship missiles
• Su-33 vs F-14 Tomcat and F/A-18 Hornet
• Soviet surface fleet vs US carrier escorts
Could Ulyanovsk and its Soviet battle group overcome the Nimitz and its American escorts? Which carrier air wing would dominate? And which navy would win this hypothetical Cold War naval battle?
