Today we're exploring the Mk 48 21-inch heavyweight torpedo, the U.S. Navy's premier submarine-launched anti-submarine weapon. While the Mk 48 is currently deployed exclusively by U.S. submarines, what would happen if a future conflict demanded that surface warships carry and launch it as well?
In this Sea Power scenario, a pack of Russian Akula III attack submarines (SSNs) launches a coordinated assault on a USS Gerald R. Ford Carrier Strike Group. The defending Los Angeles-class SSN armed with Mk 48 torpedoes is drawn away through deception, leaving the carrier group vulnerable.
With ASROC and Mk 54 lightweight torpedoes unable to reach the enemy submarines operating at extreme depths, the fleet's last hope is a U.S. guided-missile destroyer (DDG) equipped with hypothetical surface-launched Mk 48 heavyweight torpedoes.
