Did close bomber escort really protect B-17 Flying Fortresses better than sending P-51 Mustang fighters far ahead of the formation? It's a question inspired by the Red Tails movie and a long-running USAAF tactical debate from World War II.
In this DCS World experiment, we recreate two B-17 bomber formations flying over occupied France under attack from Luftwaffe Fw 190s and Bf 109s.
Scenario 1: P-51 escorts remain close to the bomber formation.
Scenario 2: P-51 escorts fly approximately 30 miles ahead, searching for and engaging enemy fighters before they can reach the bombers.
Which escort doctrine proves more effective? Will close protection reduce bomber losses, or is an aggressive forward screen the superior tactic?
