Iconic Macy’s Red Shopping Bag Sign removed from Herald Square NYC, End of an Era
The famous giant red-and-white Macy’s shopping bag (tote) billboard has been taken down from the corner of Broadway and 34th Street in Herald Square!
This four-story iconic sign — shaped like Macy’s classic shopping bag with white tissue paper peeking out the top, the Macy’s star, and the slogan “The World’s Largest Store” — stood for about 60 years (with the bag design becoming a major landmark over recent decades). It was removed in late July 2026 as part of modernization efforts by the billboard owner.
Its removal has revealed a long-hidden five-story “holdout” building from the early 1900s that Macy’s never owned. The small structure (now with boarded-up windows) sits on a tiny corner lot that a rival retailer bought around 1900–1902 to block Macy’s from acquiring the full city block. Macy’s simply built around it, and the site later became known as the “Million Dollar Corner.”
