Cedar Beach is a premier public oceanfront destination located on Jones Beach Island, a scenic barrier island off the southern coast of Long Island.
Managed by the Town of Babylon, it spans a clean, flat, three-quarter-mile stretch of white sand facing the open Atlantic Ocean. Positioned along the seventeen-mile Ocean Parkway between Gilgo Beach and Oak Beach, it provides an energetic and highly social alternative to neighboring Jones Beach State Park. The official summer season runs from late June through Labor Day, with certified lifeguards actively on duty daily. Entry is free for local residents with a Town of Babylon beach permit, while non-residents pay a daily vehicle parking fee of twenty-five dollars on weekdays and fifty dollars on weekends and holidays.
The focal point of tourism here is the Salt Shack Seaside Grill, a massive oceanfront restaurant and tiki bar that draws large crowds with fresh seafood, frozen cocktails, and an extensive summer calendar of nightly live music. Beyond swimming and entertainment, the beach is widely famous for hosting expansive beach volleyball leagues right on the sand, alongside paved basketball and handball courts. Just across the dunes, visitors can enjoy an eighteen-hole pitch-and-putt golf course and a dedicated disc golf course. On the north side facing the Great South Bay, the facility connects via a pedestrian walkway to the Cedar Beach Marina and a waterfront trailer campground. The park features over 350 species of plants, including 114 trees, colorful perennials, and seasonal blooms that change throughout the year.
Built largely through a generous philanthropic gift from Barry Diller and the Diller-von Furstenberg Family Foundation (with support from the City of New York), it reimagines the site of historic Pier 54. That pier once welcomed Titanic survivors in 1912, served as a departure point for the RMS Lusitania, hosted Cunard-White Star ocean liners, and later became a gathering place for New York’s LGBTQ+ community in the 1980s–90s before being damaged by Hurricane Sandy.
Accessibility: Little Island is fully ADA compliant with accessible pathways and ramps throughout (mostly paved, with some dirt and grass sections). About Broadway Street
Broadway stretches roughly 13–15 miles through Manhattan (and continues farther north), running from Battery Place near Bowling Green in Lower Manhattan all the way through the borough and beyond. It began as the Wickquasgeck Trail, an ancient Native American (Lenape) trading path that followed high ground. The Dutch later called it the Brede Wegh (“Broad Way”) or Heeren Straat (“Gentlemen’s Street”). When the British took control in 1664, they kept and anglicized the name Broadway because of its unusual width for the time.
Unlike most of Manhattan’s orderly grid (laid out in the 1811 Commissioners’ Plan), Broadway predates the grid and cuts diagonally across the island. This creates distinctive triangular plazas and intersections, including Union Square, Madison Square, Herald Square, Times Square, and Columbus Circle. In the late 19th century it became one of the first streets brightly lit with electric lights, earning the nickname “The Great White Way.”
The Theater District
The heart of Broadway theater is the Theater District in Midtown, centered around Times Square and stretching mainly from about 41st to 54th Streets between Sixth and Eighth Avenues (with a few venues a bit farther afield). There are 41 official Broadway theaters—professional houses with 500+ seats. Surprisingly, only a handful actually sit on the street named Broadway itself (including the Broadway Theatre, Palace Theatre, and Winter Garden Theatre). Most line the nearby numbered side streets.
Famous historic and working theaters you may pass include the Gershwin, Richard Rodgers, Minskoff, Majestic, Shubert, Winter Garden, New Amsterdam, and many others built largely in the early 20th century. The area has been the center of American commercial theater for well over a century, after earlier stages concentrated farther downtown.
