This lifestyle center opened in April 2006 on the site of the former Atlas Terminals industrial park, which dated back to the early 1900s. Diamond District, 47th Street Between 5th & 6th Ave in New York is the most valuable single block for physical luxury merchandise on the planet.
Take a walking tour through New York City’s legendary Diamond District. No talking, just the street as it is, windows filled with sparkling diamonds, bracelets, watches, necklaces, and fine jewelry.
This single Midtown Manhattan block is one of the most important jewelry trading centers in the world. An estimated 90% of diamonds that enter the United States pass through New York, and the vast majority move through the Diamond District. Today it is home to more than 2,600 businesses, employs around 33,000 people, sees an average of $400 million in daily transactions, and generates roughly $24 billion in annual sales.
Fun facts:
Many traditional deals are still sealed with a simple handshake and the Yiddish phrase “mazel und brucha” (“luck and blessing”).
The street has a long Orthodox Jewish heritage from the WWII refugee wave, though the community has become more diverse over the decades (including a large presence of Indian diamond merchants).
Ground-floor “exchanges” are packed with individual booths, while many better wholesale and appointment-only dealers operate on upper floors.
The block has appeared in films (most notably Uncut Gems) and remains a classic New York experience of old-world trading in a modern city.
Massive Volume: Over 90% of all diamonds entering the United States pass through this single Manhattan block.
The $400 Million Daily Cash Flow: The Diamond District averages an astonishing $400 million in transactions every single day, translating to roughly $24 billion to $25 billion annually.
Concentration of Wealth: Unlike Fifth Avenue, where money is spread out across clothing, hotels, and restaurants, almost 100% of the money moving on 47th Street is concentrated in ultra-high-density wealth: diamonds, gold bullion, and luxury watches.
The handshake system used in the Diamond District is one of the most fascinating anomalies in modern commerce. It allows merchants to finalize multi-million dollar deals completely verbally, without lawyers, written contracts, or immediate bank transfers.
The Phrase: Mazal uBracha
To close a transaction, the two parties shake hands and say the Hebrew phrase, Mazal uBracha (often shortened to just Mazal on 47th Street).
The Meaning: It translates to Luck and a Blessing. Structurally, the seller wishes the buyer good luck with the stone (mazal), and the buyer wishes the seller a blessing with the money (bracha).
The Legal Weight: In the diamond world, saying these words is the exact legal equivalent of signing a 50-page binding contract. The moment those words are spoken, ownership technically shifts, and you owe the money—even if the physical cash wont change hands for weeks.
The Memo System: A broker can walk into a secure booth, take a $500,000 diamond from a dealer, and walk out onto the street with it just by signing a tiny slip of paper called a memo. They take the stone to show a potential buyer, entirely on trust.
No Backing Out: If a merchant says Mazal on a diamond parcel, and the market crashes an hour later, they still must pay the agreed price. Backing out of a verbal agreement is completely forbidden.
The Enforcement: Why Nobody Cheats
People dont break the handshake because the consequences of doing so are worse than losing money. The system is enforced by a highly efficient social and institutional architecture:
Social Capital is Actual Capital: In a street where billions move on handshakes, your reputation is your collateral. If a dealer gains a reputation for being dishonest, word spreads through the tightly-knit community instantly. No one will do business with them, effectively destroying their career overnight.
The Diamond Dealers Club (DDC): If an actual dispute occurs, merchants do not go to regular U.S. civil courts. Instead, they go to the Diamond Dealers Club, a private, ultra-secure industry exchange on 47th Street. The DDC has its own internal arbitration court run by industry elders. Their rulings are legally binding, and if you refuse to comply with a DDC judgment, your name and photo are posted on the walls of diamond bourses worldwide, banning you from the global trade forever.
Tips if you plan to visit or buy:
Research the 4Cs (cut, color, clarity, carat) beforehand. Only buy significant diamonds with reputable certification (GIA is the gold standard). Ignore street hawkers. Comparison-shop aggressively — competition is fierce and bargaining is expected (cash can sometimes help). Check online reviews, ask about return policies in writing, and consider making appointments, especially for upper-floor dealers who often offer better value than the flashiest street-level windows. The density of competing merchants is what makes prices competitive.

The official summer season runs from late June through Labor Day, with certified lifeguards actively on duty daily. Entry is free for local residents with a Town of Babylon beach permit, while non-residents pay a daily vehicle parking fee of twenty-five dollars on weekdays and fifty dollars on weekends and holidays.
The focal point of tourism here is the Salt Shack Seaside Grill, a massive oceanfront restaurant and tiki bar that draws large crowds with fresh seafood, frozen cocktails, and an extensive summer calendar of nightly live music. Beyond swimming and entertainment, the beach is widely famous for hosting expansive beach volleyball leagues right on the sand, alongside paved basketball and handball courts. Just across the dunes, visitors can enjoy an eighteen-hole pitch-and-putt golf course and a dedicated disc golf course. On the north side facing the Great South Bay, the facility connects via a pedestrian walkway to the Cedar Beach Marina and a waterfront trailer campground.
