Huey Lewis tells the story of his biggest hit...The Power of Love. It’s become legendary both because of the feel-good sing-along chorus and the iconic movies it supported. Huey was in the midst of a huge album THAT RULED the mid 80s with 4 big hits, when he was tapped to write the theme song for not 1 but 2 blockbuster films, so he had to choose. The one he said yes to (Back to the Future) was a challenge. He had no desire to write a dumb song with the movie title in it… Huey thought the title was too on the nose, so the director said, "Just send me the next thing you write…" Huey did just that, and Power of Love became a #1 smash… The only problem is that the filmmakers didn’t capitalize on it. They wouldn't let him put it on his own album and he made almost nothing from the song because of it.

I’m excited to bring you another episode from our series Revelations, where featured artists take us for a magical deep dive, exploring their greatest songs and albums. Stories and points of view you won’t find anywhere else. Well today is a special one. This was my favorite song when I was 10 years old. It came out in the glorious summer of 1985. It was the main song from not only the greatest blockbuster of 1985 but maybe the best film of the 80s and we’ve got the master behind it with us today. I’m talking about the Power of Love by Huey Lewis and the News from the magical time travel classic Back to the Future. Truly the Wizard of Oz of our time…

It's a movie that our kids watch….I’m not quite in that category yet, but you get what I’m saying. So apparently Huey Lewis was called into a meeting with the biggest filmmaker in the world, Steven Spielberg, who was producing the film along with Director Bob Zemeckis and his partner Bob Gale, who both wrote the screenplay as well. They told Huey they wanted him to write a song for this movie because the films hero Marty McFly would be a fan of Huey Lewis and the News. Huey was flying high at that moment in time with Sports having spent 1 week at #1 on the album charts in the ultra competitive year of 1984, where the least amount of albums went to #1 ever.

It was the years of 3 of the biggest blockbusters ever, with Michael Jackson Thriller still riding high and Prince Purple Rain that spent 24 weeks at the top along with Bruce Springsteen’s mega seller Born in the USA, not to mention The Footloose soundtrack… Huey stole #1 for a solitary week off the strength of the singles Heart and Soul, the Heart of Rock and Roll, This is It, and I Want a New Drug. Not to mention a couple of other cuts from the album that got radio play, including Bad is Bad and Walking on a Thin Line… the album would go on to sell 7 million copies in the US and over 10 million worldwide. Huey was so hot that the #1 movie of 1984 allegedly asked him to write their theme song…Ghostbusters…
