TODAY’S BAND is the king of the term Underappreciated. They deserved better. They were so much better than you remember. WE owe them an apology because while we were busy fawning over all the other bands in the 90s, they were quietly writing two of the best albums of the decade, including a debut that is one of the best for a decade filled with stellar first records. They are easily the most underappreciated band of the first half of the 90s; they are the Gin Blossoms. Their debut New Miserable Experience was exactly as advertised. Songs that got you through the tough times. During the recording of it, the band’s primary songwriter, Doug Hopkins, was fired due to his out-of-control drinking. But here’s the thing everyone forgets.. Gin Blossoms' debut actually flopped when it first came out in the summer of 1992. The band thought that was it, but then a full year later their music video for Hey Jealousy went gangbusters, and MTV and Radio played it like crazy and they were everywhere, including playing a famous late-night show where they were told by the famous talk show host the song made him want to go to 7-11 and get a slurpee…The band had 3 or 4 big hits with their former band member and main songwriter watching from the sidelines. He sadly took his own life. But the band would follow up their stellar debut with 3 more big hits from an excellent sophomore record, making for 7 hits in 3 years. But then the band would disappear. I tracked down the singer and guitarist to get the stories of all their huge hits. Here it is.
