Maverick Top Gun is one of the ten biggest film of all time now. It’s well over 600 million dollars grossed just in America. The sequel to every 80s kids favorite aviator film Top Gun from 1986 is incredible. It all started with the original though and one of the cornerstones of this franchise is the music. The original film had a #1 soundtrack that brandished it as cultural phenomenon.
With the #2 hit Danger Zone by the king of the movie soundtrack Kenny Loggins, as well as THE #1 love them Take My Breath Away by Berlin and the #12 power ballad Heaven in Your Eyes by Loverboy, not to mention You’ve Lost that Lovin’ Feeling by the Righteous Brothers as well as Harold Faltermeyer’s theme played by Billy Idol’s guitarist Steve stevens it was one for the ages. Not only the best selling soundtrack of 1986 but one of the best selling soundtracks ever with 9 million sold in america alone. It shows the power of the 80s especially when compared to the music of the sequel. Top Gun Maverick. Even with Maverick grossing over a billion globally, the strength of the music came from its former soundtrack, as Danger Zone went back into the top 5 on Spotify and apple and Take MY breath Away even though it wasn’t in the movie…
Whereas the two new songs from Maverick by Lady Ga Ga and One Republic didn’t make a dent. Not even reaching the top 30 and the album peaked at #17. The numbers speak for themselves but form personal experience, when I saw Top Gun in the theater as kid, my eyes were bigger than saucers with Danger Zone Kicked in at the beginning of the film and I rushed out after the movie ended and bought the soundtrack… It came full circle when I watched the excitement in my 13 year old son’s eyes
When at almost the same age as me decades before he sat there wide eyed with excitement as Danger Zone again played.. and after the movie he was buzzing about Danger Zone, pulling it up on Spotiy and listening for the next few weeks, even though Lady Ga Ga’s song was the last thing he heard in the movie. Truth is nobody was walking out of the theater going I gotta go listen to that Lady Ga Ga song
