Icelanders have voted against restarting negotiations to join the European Union.
In Saturday’s referendum, which saw a turnout of 82.5 percent, 52.8 percent voted against reopening talks.
Iceland first applied to join the EU back in 2009, but halted negotiations in 2013.
The renewed debate comes amid economic concerns and growing security tensions in the Arctic. But opponents of restarting the talks focused on protecting Iceland’s fishing industry and national sovereignty.
