In the United States, two people have died after intense flash flooding tore through the Grand Canyon. More than 20 others may still be missing.
Heavy rain sent water surging through the canyon on Saturday. It wrecked trails and footbridges, and damaged the pipes that carry water around the park. The National Park Service recovered the body of a 46-year-old man on Sunday, and confirmed a second body on Monday. Rescuers had flown 62 hikers out by helicopter by Sunday morning. But the park service said on Sunday that more than 20 people might still be missing, and asked the public for information about any hikers who were in the area. Additional storms are forecast this week, and parts of the park are closed.

Baksu. In English, it means “applause” clapping your hands to show appreciation, encouragement, or celebration. And in Korea, you can see it in all kinds of moments. What do all these moments have in common? Look at this! A coach applauding his players. Here, graduates are clapping for themselves and their friends. And look at this official welcoming ceremony in Brasília, where the two leaders and their spouses are applauding together. At award ceremonies, a round of applause is also a way to celebrate someone else’s achievement. But wait, here’s another familiar face! Actor Matt Damon was recently spotted enjoying a KBO baseball game in Korea and he was joining the crowd with a round of applause or baksu
Now, this is quite a sight! Are we at Waterbomb? Look at all that water pouring into the stands! Well, this isn’t a water festival. This is a baseball game! And it’s not just water that’s making a splash. Fans are armed with all kinds of cheering gear, creating an atmosphere even hotter than the sweltering late-August weather. And there’s a reason for all this excitement. The KBO League has just entered the 10-million spectator era for the third consecutive season. The cheerleaders lead the crowd, while fans sing, clap, wave their cheering tools, and move together as one. It almost feels like the entire stadium has become one giant cheering section! And with the stands packed with fans, you can almost hear the roar coming right through the photos. And of course, all that energy is ultimately for the players on the field. With thousands of fans behind them, the players bring their own passion to every pitch, hit and play. That’s the power of KBO fandom the fans don’t just watch the game. They become part of it.
Look at this! A retro-looking train is pulling into the station. It may not look as sleek or modern as today’s trains, but there’s something strangely familiar and comforting about it. And wait look closely at the front. It says, “Thank you for 29 years of dedication to Busan.” The driver’s expression seems to say it all. And here’s a look back at when it all began. The image may look blurry and the quality isn’t great but remember, this is a photo from decades ago! The signs celebrating the opening of Busan’s subway show just how exciting that moment must have been for the city. And now, after 29 years and about three million kilometers on the tracks, the train has taken its final ride. Former passengers came to say goodbye, taking photos and preserving their memories of a train that was once part of their everyday lives. And look at this warm farewell. Railway staff and drivers gathered to applaud the train one last time. After 29 years of carrying generations of Busan citizens, this familiar train is finally taking its place in history.
What do you think those giant yellow umbrellas are doing on the street? They’re upside down and hanging from trees! Well, look closer. These are actually ginkgo fruit collectors a clever idea designed to catch the fruit before it falls onto the street. Ginkgo trees one of a symbols of autumn in Korea are beautiful, but their fallen fruit can create a rather unpleasant smell when it gets stepped on. The idea is not only practical, but surprisingly pretty. With pastel-colored collectors hanging from the trees, the street almost looks like an outdoor umbrella exhibition. And when the sunlight hits them, they even seem to sparkle! Now, these are ginkgo fruits, scattered all over the street. In the past, street cleaners had to constantly sweep them up and remove them. When ginkgo trees turn the streets into a sea of gold, it’s easy to see why we want to keep them around. And sometimes, a simple, ingenious idea is all it takes to enjoy the beauty without the unpleasant smell.
And that’s a look at some of the everyday moments that make Korea special.

Korea is set to bring the leaders of five Central Asian nations together in Seoul in two weeks time, for their first summit as a group.
With the region’s strategic value rising amid supply-chain uncertainty and competition over critical minerals, our foreign affairs correspondent examines what is at stake.
Hi Sooyoung, its great to have you in-studio.
Preparations are under way this month for the first Korea–Central Asia Summit.
When will it take place, and why is it significant?
Sure, this first-ever Korea-Central Asia Summit will be an unprecedented event, coming at an interesting time of geopolitical shifts and complications,
when President Lee Jae Myung hosts the leaders of Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan , Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan in Seoul on September 16th.
It will be the first leaders’ meeting in the six-nation format.
“Central Asia is going through the huge transformation and all of the countries in the region, they are opening up. There is a big reforms are going on and our economy is developing; the education, the infrastructure, healthcare sectors are developing very much. And in this very moment, in this process of transformation, we need a very strong and reliable partners and South Korea is one of those partners.”
“Central Asian countries have also been diversifying their external cooperation by regularizing regional summit since 2018 and expanding summit diplomacy with the major nations such as the United States, China, Japan, Russia, and the European Union.”
What outcomes are now being prepared?
We can expect the summit to set out a broad framework for future cooperation in strategic sectors.
At the final senior officials’ meeting in Astana in late July, the six sides negotiated the remaining issues in a proposed joint statement, provisionally titled the Seoul Declaration.
Ambassador Baik Joo-hyeon expects them to try and institutionalize cooperation.
“It also seeks to expand trade investment by strengthening cooperation in supply chains, customs and regulations and to promote mutually beneficial practical cooperation in the fields of energy, critical minerals and infrastructure.”
The Industry Ministry said that talks so far have covered critical-mineral supply chains and a proposal for a regular C5-plus-Korea industry ministers’ meeting.
A business summit will be held alongside the leaders’ meeting.
Why is Central Asia important to Korea strategically and economically?
Central Asian countries offer a combination of three factors Korea needs: mineral resources for advanced industries, access to routes across Eurasia and young, expanding markets.
UN figures put the region’s population at more than 84 million in 2025, up from 56.2 million in 2000.
In Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan, almost half the population is under 25.
“South Korean technology innovation, Uzbekistan, the young generation, capable generation, the growing population as well as the natural resources can complement each other and fulfill the needs of each other. And our goal is to move beyond the traditional concept of investment. We want to build a very unique partnership which will make it possible to develop, to produce and export together.”
You travelled to three Central Asian countries when plans for this summit were first announced.
What did you observe about Korea’s relationship with the region?
When I travelled to Turkmenistan, Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan in June 2024, what struck me was the depth of trust and familiarity between Korea and the region.
That has historic roots in the region’s ethnic Korean communities.
Uzbekistan alone is home to more than 180-thousand ethnic Koreans.
These ties are still developing in both directions, among young people through K-pop and cultural content as well as their studies.
Uzbek Ambassador Alisher Abdusalomov himself has studied in Korea.
In Tashkent, two young girls asked whether I was Korean, then came over and hugged me in a supermarket.
It showed that the relationship extends well beyond policy a warm and deeply personal connection.
I see. Well, we look forward to covering this first-ever summit.
