Skip Lievsay played me the track he made with Ryo Leyh for “Next-Gen Interconnect” and I said this is such a beautiful piece. It's long and beautiful and evolving. And then he said, yeah, but wouldn’t it be cool if the voices had stacked layers of harmony? So we thought we’d try that for “Stacked FET.” We started with a tonal canvas from recordings we made at the Albany fabrication labs. Then Ryo improvised a melody over it. I took that and harmonized it to make stacked layers of different types of chords.
We were like, wow, this sounds really cool - we just need to put a groove on it. And so we built a nice little groove that connected to the machine sounds already there. And that was the glue. My brother, bassist Bill Urmson, added a few bass tracks. Finally, Eric Potter, a sound designer and a beautiful guitar player, recorded this sort of Robert Fripp, stuttery guitar stuff that is layered on top of everything.
This track has it all: cool machines, a killer groove, a trippy guitar, and most memorably, the thick, thick stacks of harmonic voices.
— Paul Urmson
