Late last year, IBM Research unveiled the world’s first successful polymer optical waveguide. It was a culmination of advancements in chip assembly and packaging, called co-packaged optics, that could replace electrical interconnects in computer centers to greatly speed up training AI models and countless other computing problems — using far less energy than today’s setups. But once you’ve come up with a cutting-edge new technology, how do you test something completely brand new to make sure that it works like you intended? Watch as IBM Distinguished Engineer John Knickerbocker walks us through how IBM Research tests its new co-packaged optics modules at our labs in Yorktown Heights.
