Nai by Carlos Carty, video, vocals & arrangement by Farya Faraji. This is a Romanian colindă—colinde are the Christmas carols of Romania and Moldova, a rich and varied repertoire from a wide array of regions. This one is arranged in the traditional folkloric style of modern day Romania, with the țambal, double bass, acoustic guitar and nai pan flute forming the instrumentation.
Lyrics in Romanian:
Ia sculați voi gazde mari
Ia sculați români plugari
Ca vă vin colindători
Noaptea pe la cântători,
Nu vă vin cu nici un rău,
Ci v-aduc pe Dumnezeu,
Dumnezeu cel mititel,
Mititel și-nfășățel
De la ușe pân' la masă
Fașa-i dalbă de mătasă
Cu scufie de bumbac
Moale să-i fie la cap
La mulți ani cu sănătate
Să vă dea Domnul de toate.
English translation:
Rise up, great hosts, arise,
Rise up, Romanian ploughmen,
For the carolers are coming to you,
In the night, among the singers.
They come to you with no evil,
But they bring you God,
God the little one,
Little and swaddled.
From the door all the way to the table,
His swaddling cloth is white silk,
With a cotton cap,
Soft upon His head.
Many years, with health to you,
May the Lord grant you everything.
