In this video, Maxx makes the suggestion of playing a good character at larp, which he believes is a departure from what people generally gravitate towards. This video would probably be better as a podcast, since it is just talking. This is a deep concept, that probably deserves more treatment, research, discussion and time, however this should get you started on considering the concept.
Understandably, most larps are different and some are quite different. Also the definition of "Good" can vary drastically depending on who is asked. So for simplicity sake, assume Maxx is speaking about American-Style boffer larps. However, this information could still be used at many types of events where you play a character of your own design.
For many years I have seen many characters come and go, and yet only a handful of those characters were people really trying hard to be a good character. Most characters I observe are opportunistic, neither good or evil, but somewhere in the middle and they tend to lean one way or the other depending on circumstances. And this is understandable, being open to options will provide the most possibility for outcomes. Larp is a release, so people tend to want to release stress and putting yourself into a mold may act to hinder that. And especially at Hack n' Slash type larps, a good character might not be a great fit. However, that's the challenge.
The video is full of a lot of what seems like contradiction and confusion, however, keep in mind the definition of the word "Good". Maxx simply offers some ideas to help you in the Quest and to sway you to consider playing a character that is good. It's hard, but the challenge can be rewarding and fun.
If playing a good character isn't your thing, try creating an NPC at your game that is, this will allow you to explore the concept, but not be married to it in your actual game.
*Remember a good character doesn't have to be a martyr, a priest or many other of the ideals that come to mind. So, don't get too caught up in codes or religions. And playing a good character doesn't immediately mean you must seek and overcome evil. It just means, in your life, you do good, so don't get it twisted. Just ask yourself as the character at every action, is this good, or not. If it's good, do it. If it's not good, don't do it.
*Pro-Tip: If you have to or are trying to find a loophole or justification to do something... Then it is not a good action, pass on it or find a way that is good.
