Schmidt glanced at his watch. His shift was winding down, and after a long night, the prospect of finally heading home was becoming increasingly difficult to ignore. The new kid seemed sharp enough—alert, eager, and not quite as nervous as most first-timers. He'd picked things up quickly during their brief conversation, too.
Besides, Schmidt told himself, there wasn't much to it. A quick orientation, a few basic instructions, and the kid could manage the rest. He didn't need someone hovering over his shoulder all night.
Everyone had to learn eventually.
Schmidt looked at him again.
He seemed capable enough.
He'd be fine on his first night with just a brief orientation... wouldn't he?
