Today I spoke with Liz Mall, who placed her faith in Jesus as a child but ultimately deconstructed as the truth claims of Christianity fell apart.
We touched on many topics, including:
• Being raised as a Christian but still questioning the existence of god very early in life.
• Facing questions of nihilism, existential dread, and depression in her childhood.
• Deepening her faith and moving into apologetics to be able to better defend her faith.
• Realizing she was not a conservative believer anymore as she dug into topics like evolution and canonicity.
• The importance of wanting the truth than our current worldview.
• Deconstructing the concepts of transcendent truth and ultimate reality.
• Creating a worldview based on what is true and beautiful, rather than what is just a culturally acquired coping mechanism.
• Having the humility to doubt god and say, "I don't know."
• Thinking through the benefits and liabilities of mythology as we shape our worldviews.
• Concurrently embracing nihilism, meaning, and beauty at the same time as we find ways to live with personal purpose while recognizing that there is no transcendent purpose in life.
