On June 17, 2025, police responded to Wegmans in Morris County, New Jersey, after a woman was observed leaving the store with unpaid merchandise.

Officers confronted the suspect in the parking lot after she had loaded groceries into her vehicle. The woman, identified as Laurie, repeatedly claimed she forgot her wallet in the car and was planning to return to pay, stating she was pressed for time to pick up her daughters from softball practice.

Under New Jersey law (2C:20-11B(1)), shoplifting merchandise valued over $200 constitutes an indictable offense, requiring arrest rather than a simple summons. Loss prevention determined the total value of the unpaid items exceeded this threshold.

Throughout the encounter, the suspect pleaded with officers about her children waiting at a local batting facility. Officers explained she would be arrested, fingerprinted, processed, and permanently trespassed from Wegmans. She expressed concern about having a panic attack during transport.

The defendant was charged with Shoplifting and released on a Complaint Summons with a court date scheduled for July 9, 2025 at Morris County Superior Court.

Charges:
Shoplifting (2C:20-11B(1)) - Indictable Offense
