One of the things I'm always looking for when building patches or electroacoustic interactions is that sweet spot between surprise and control—and something I have *really* been enjoying lately is playing with surprising silences.
It's a bit funny, because I know that SOUND is typically the primary focus of someone making music...
But the way that we come in and out of silence can offer SO much.
Are you suddenly dropped into this sound world? Are you launched into silence? Are you gently lowered into it? Are you surprised when the floor suddenly falls from beneath you?
So, I've been experimenting and playing with this a lot more in my patch design lately. Not only considering how and when these instruments make sound, but also how and when they STOP making sound.
And the results have been surprising, delightful, and nerdy, and it all makes me quite happy. 😊
In this video I'm exploring some vocal processing and sampling using a patch made in MaxMSP.
