How do you navigate conversations where people dominate the topic with "their thing?"
One avenue that people like to use to get to know you is, "Oh, what sports do you follow?"
And so if you say, "I don't really follow any sports," sometimes they don't take that hint and they just keep talking to you about sports because that's what they were wanting to talk about.
An interesting way to navigate these kinds of conversations is to let them explain everything they wanted to about sports, until you finally hit on a subject matter that excites you, and then steer the conversation in that direction.
If we are talking about something I don't want to talk about, I'll ask you a bunch of questions until we eventually get to the point where I get to bring up the thing that I want to talk about.
