I once took a serious girlfriend to meet my 90 year old mentor Pete because I wanted his approval.
We had planned to spend the day with him, but after lunch he insisted I take her to an art show up the street.
I protested, saying we wanted to spend time with him but he pushed harder.
With a pit in my stomach I agreed to leave.
As we were walking out the door. Pete asked my girlfriend to wait in the hall so he could speak to me alone.
My insides twisted into knots. I thought he didn't like her and he was going to tell me not to come back.
Instead, he put his hands on my shoulders and said, Vance, when you get to the art show, don't look at the art. Look at her looking at the art. It's through those eyes that she'll see you.
This insight changed my life.
I noticed which pieces she was drawn to and realized she loved detailed art that took a lot of time to create.
I realized she would hold me to a high standard and would respect the time it takes to create something valuable. I knew then I wanted to marry her.
