If your boss tells you that there isn't any money for a raise, don't give up.

Instead, use interest-based negotiating to find other ways that the business can compensate you.

Think about what's important to you. Of course, you need money to pay bills, but what else do you want and need over the long term?

Are you starting a side hustle?

Instead of a raise perhaps you can request more time off or different work hours.

Do you need to bolster your resume? Consider asking for a title change. This costs the company nothing but could help you get a better job in the future.

Are there things that the business could buy that would help you? Sometimes companies get special offers or can use resources like credit card miles to purchase items that will help you but don't get counted on the salary line of their budget.

The best negotiators know what everyone needs out of a situation and then find creative ways to achieve those interests. The next time money gets in the way, use interest-based negotiating to get what you need out of your work.
