This is my first real foray into integrating AI into my music. The inspiration came from my wife who refers to music that is musicians playing for musicians as 'Husband Murdering Music' (think Emerson, Lake and Palmer or Joe Satriani). To be fair, when I listen to this genre, I tend to play over and over.
After driving her crazy by listening to a Satriani song 500 times, I decided to create a piece for her that was a little bit more laidback – however, I required a female vocalist. Enter the use of AI to carry the tune. Although the beat is a slow bluesy 6/8 vibe, I added the organic keyboards and electric guitar to scrape along the blackboard that is the backdrop for this piece (the keys being in the style of ELP and the guitar being a direct lift from The Crush of Lover, which I had just covered).
There is a lot of debate as to whether AI is a healthy addition to the music world, but this piece wouldn't exist without the AI vocals and for that I'm grateful. There was a time that people said the synthesizer was a bad thing and that it shouldn't be used to replace musicians such as flutists, but eventually we figured out how use the technology to augment the music. (Brian May bragged on the liner notes of the first seven Queen albums that there were no synthesizers used, but he spent hours in the recording of Another One Bites the Dust, trying to replicate the synth sound using his guitar and another piece of technology: the Eventide Harmonizer). I say: use the technology that is available, but use it wisely and judiciously, and music will be better for it!
