Gerry Rafferty was a brilliant musician out of Paisley (Ferguslie Park). He first came on to the music scene teaming up with Billy Connolly in the folk band The Humblebums. After that, he teamed up with Joe Egan (another Fergie Park resident) to form Stealers Wheel and had a huge hit with Stuck in the Middle with You from their first album.
Legal problems surrounded the band as they broke up and Gerry found himself contractually unable to record for three years. Travelling from Glasgow down to London to meet with lawyers and perform the occasional gig, Gerry wrote the lyrics to this semi-biographical, self-reflective song. Once he was finally able to release an album, Baker Street was another immediate success. With its haunting sax solo, blistering guitar solo and Gerry chill delivery of the story-line, Bake Street became a mainstay on both AM and FM radios in the summer of 1978.
Sadly, Gerry succumbed to alcoholism in 2011. Craig and Charlie Reid of The Proclaimers, along with former bandmates Joe Egan and Rab Noakes, Barbara Dickson, and Graham Lyle, all attended his funeral.
