"We Die Young"
I was writing a song about dying, when I noticed that everyone who writes or sings about death, dies ... and usually tragically.
Layne Staley was the lead vocalist of Alice in Chains, which rose to international fame in the early 1990s as part of Seattle's grunge movement. He was known for his distinctive vocal style as well as his harmonizing with guitarist/vocalist Jerry Cantrell.
The first song on the band's first album is "We Die Young". The album certified triple-platinum, however Staley's deteriorating condition due to heroin abuse led him to enter a rehabilitation clinic.
In 2002, Staley's body was found dead in his home, having died 2 weeks earlier from a mixture of heroin and cocaine. His body was found, on April 5 - the same day fellow grunge musician Kurt Cobain died eight years prior.
Side Note: I quickly reworked the theme of my tune to be about returning home through space and time (totally not dying). I then dropped the lyrics and turned the melody into a guitar instrumental. That should be safe (youtu.be/1FuUKGrjEGY)!
