As Hurricane Lowell barreled towards Hawai’i this past week, WHOI researchers joined forces with the US Air Force Hurricane Hunters to track its power and trajectory.
WHOI senior scientist Steve Jayne, joined by MIT-WHOI joint program Navy students Nathan Pawlowicz and Lawrence Cen and post-doc Jacob Davis, are deploying a network of wave drifters and ALAMO floats to capture ocean data before and during the powerful storm.
The Hurricane Hunter flights concluded on Monday and Lowell was downgraded to a tropical storm, but these oceanographic instruments will keep measuring for many more months to track other potential storms and gather more targeted observations.
Funded by the Office of Naval Research, the SASCWATCH program combines coordinated data from ocean floats, satellites, and high-resolution models to improve hurricane forecasting.
