A major fire engulfed Notre Dame in 2019, rendering significant damage to this architectural masterpiece. But, this damage gave archeologists an opportunity, to study it's past in detail. As a huge surprise, archeologists have found thousands of metal staples used in the masonry. A technique, not employed by other medieval builders, till decades later. Some of these staples date back to the year 1160 CE. Another intriguing finding from the chemical analysis of these staples, is that these come from multiple different sources. Notre Dame is now undoubtedly the oldest Gothic Cathedral to use iron, when others were using wood.
