The lunar surface reaches a temperature of 127 degrees Celsius during the day, and drops to minus 173 degrees Celsius at night. An astonishing new discovery has found areas with temperature at a "cozy" 17 degrees Celsius. This is inside a cavern in "The Sea of Tranquility", where Apollo 11 landed. At 100 meters below the surface, sunlight only reaches a part of the cave, the rest remains in shadow. The shade does not allow the area to heat up, and the cave's walls prevent the warmth from escaping. Along with a pleasant temperature, the cave can provide shelter from radiation and meteorites. Formed by molten lava, billions of years ago, many such "Lunar pits" are expected to exist on the Moon. The discovery is a "Giant Leap" for the engineers, planning to build a habitat on the Moon in the future.
