'Huế rất là buồn'

Hue is a very sad place.... So it was said for decades after the Vietnam War....
Since borders reopened in 2022, Hue is the Vietnamese city where I have spent the most time. I don’t mind Hue in the heat. I love it in the wet, grey, cooler months. The volatility of Hue’s weather is well suited to its volatile history. It’s a place of so much depth. But Hue also requires work. Stuff like reading and looking historical twists, different architecture, designs and shapes - and exploring different flavours.

Hue has produced plenty of royals and politicians. It’s also produced a few centuries of spiritual leaders, musicians, architects, poets and artists. And it's experienced loads of upheaval. It’s a lot to digest.
