How to tin battery poles without overheating the battery and without getting a dry joint.
My iron has a big 5 mm tip and is set to 325°C. I'm using good leaded solder and "no clean" electronic flux (clean it anyway though).

Lightly sand the surface with 180 sand paper, apply a tiny amount of flux, apply lots of tin to the solder iron tip and then just hold for a moment. If you need to hold for long then you've got a too small tip on your iron and you risk damaging the cell. It should only take a moment.
