If you are a decorative knot tyer, then you will find the clove hitch to be a great knot to learn. It is often used when starting decorative rope work, it holds extremely tight and because of the low profile of the knot, it is easily covered.
The clove hitch is also often used as a starting knot in other applications such as, used as a starting knot in a truckers hitch, or securing buoys to a guard rail.
