Oftentimes when our bodies are really tight, we try to force our bodies when we stretch. This may help you increase flexibility, but this could also cause injury and also just make your stretching sessions very uncomfortable. This also keeps your nervous system agitated and stressed. When you learn how to relax during your stretching, not only can you increase your flexibility by stretching every day, you also increase your body awareness and feel more calm and centered overall.

The way that your flexibility can increase is because even in a relaxed position, you’re still stretching your body and releasing tension. You’re just not forcing your body into a further position.

Many people will ask, don’t you get more results when you force your bodies to go farther? The answer is yes. But there are other negative consequences to this.

By forcing your body to go farther, you keep your nervous system agitated. You don’t allow your body awareness to increase, which means you don’t feel connected
