I had planned to make Temple Blocks for a while to add to my growing collection of Percussion Instruments, many of them handmade for use in Drum Circles. Temple Blocks are a type of Drum similar to Frog Blocks.
I started this project during the Winter and decided to finish it this week.
I have not seen a set of Tunable / Tuneable Temple Blocks before, only open or closed variations and I wanted to create a New Design / Version that the tone could be changed or fine tuned by moving a baffle on the back.
The end result works exactly as I had planned and I am designing a variation for the future that will provide even more scope for playing.
I also wanted these to be played on the ground as children attend the Drum Circle. They can easily be converted to attach to a Drum Stand for a drummer to add to his kit.
The Temple Blocks are made from 12mm Baltic Birch Plywood and experimenting with other thicknesses or solid woods would give a different yet usable result.
This woodworking project was mostly built using power tools, but it can be adapted to use hand tools.
I will have detailed plans including the exact dimensions for the ones I made in the video available at a future date. These will be available for a small cost.
I like the idea of making my own Tools, especially if it is a Tool that is not easily found or readily available. Handmade Tools give great satisfaction and for me it is fun knowing that I created something to help me better improve my woodworking experience.
