In this video I make some simple shelf brackets from some 25mm by 3mm mild steel. brackets like this are easy to make and look great. If you are wondering how long it takes to make a pair of brackets like this, you can do it in about 40 minutes including cleaning and painting (I know because I made another pair the next day). If you need heavier duty brackets you could use thicker steel, up to about 6mm thick, after that you might need a press brake to do the bending or some means of heating up the steel.
