In this video, I take a beautiful spalted walnut log (bowl blank) and turn it into a stunning end grain bowl. The spalting in this walnut had some incredible character, and watching that grain reveal itself never gets old. This one was a seriously fun project from start to finish.
As always, I turned the bowl on my Record Power Coronet Herald wood lathe and used my trusty Easy Wood Tools carbide turning tools to shape and refine the form. For the finish, I sanded and polished with Yorkshire Grit abrasive paste and sealed it with Hampshire Sheen microcrystalline wax for a smooth, natural sheen that really makes the spalting pop.
End grain bowls can be a bit of a challenge, but they’re always worth it when the figure comes alive like this.
