In this woodturning project, I create a beautiful pedestal bowl from solid beech wood and add decorative detailing using a beading tool. This was such a rewarding and satisfying process — combining clean shaping with a touch of creativity to give the base that extra character.
Beech is a fantastic timber to work with. Known for its durability, fine grain, and light colour, it’s perfect for projects where you want crisp detail and a smooth, elegant finish. After carefully selecting a clean, defect-free blank, I shaped the form into a balanced pedestal bowl, focusing on symmetry and flowing curves.
Once the main shape was complete, I used carbide turning tools from Easy Wood Tools to refine the piece and then added decorative beads to the pedestal, giving the bowl a unique and personalised touch.
As always, this bowl was turned on the Record Power Coronet Herald wood lathe.
To finish, I applied Yorkshire Grit to enhance the natural beauty of the beech and achieve a silky-smooth surface. A final coat of microcrystalline wax provides protection and a lasting sheen that will keep the bowl looking great for years to come.
The end result is a functional yet elegant beech pedestal bowl — a real testament to the creativity and skill that makes woodturning such an enjoyable craft.
