About this video: Minecraft world backups can save years of progress when a world becomes corrupted, gets accidentally deleted, or stops working after an update. This video shows you how to find, create, and load a backup in Minecraft Java Edition so you can restore your world and start playing again.
To get started, open the Minecraft Launcher and click the “Installations” tab. Find the installation you normally use, and click the folder icon to open your Minecraft folder. In here, open the “backups” folder to see the world backups Minecraft has created.
If you do not have a backup yet, open Minecraft and go to “Singleplayer”. Click once on the world you want to protect, select “Edit”, and click “Make Backup”. You can also click “Open Backups Folder” from this menu to access the backup immediately. Minecraft may automatically ask you to create a backup when opening an older or modded world, and we recommend allowing it to make one before continuing.
From there, find the zipped backup you want to restore. Right-click the file, select “Extract All”, and click “Extract”. Open the extracted folder until you find the actual world folder. When you open the correct folder, you should immediately see the files and folders that make up the world rather than another folder containing them.
Next, move that world folder somewhere easy to access, such as your desktop. Return to your main Minecraft folder using the folder icon in the launcher, and open the “saves” folder. Drag and drop the restored world folder into the saves folder.
After that, open Minecraft and go back to “Singleplayer”. Your recovered world should now appear in the world list, and you can join it like nothing ever happened. Just make sure the world folder is not buried inside an extra folder, as Minecraft will not recognize it if the files are nested too deeply.
