About this video: Proximity voice chat makes conversations on a Minecraft server feel much more natural by limiting who you can hear based on where everyone is in the world. In this video, we set up Simple Voice Chat on a Minecraft server, configure the distance settings, and install the mod players need in order to use it.
The installation process depends on your server software. Paper and other Bukkit-based servers use the plugin version of Simple Voice Chat, which goes into the server’s plugins folder. Fabric, Forge, and NeoForge servers use the version made for their respective mod loader, and that JAR file goes into the mods folder. Start the server once the file is installed so it can generate everything needed for voice chat.
You can then find the voicechat-server.properties file inside the voicechat folder on a plugin server. On a modded server, this file will be located in the config folder instead. Open it with Notepad or another text editor to change how far voices carry in-game.
For this setup, we change max_voice_distance to 48.0, giving normal voice chat a maximum range of 48 blocks. We also set whisper_distance to 24.0. These values can be increased or decreased depending on how you want conversations to work on your server.
Another option in this file is broadcast_range. This setting can override the other voice distances with one global range. It is set to -1 by default, and we generally recommend leaving it that way unless you specifically want every voice transmission to use the same distance.
Simple Voice Chat uses port 24454 by default, so self-hosted servers may need to allow that UDP port through their network. The port being used is listed near the top of the properties file. If you would rather avoid handling the networking and server setup yourself, SimpleGameHosting also supports setting up servers with Simple Voice Chat.
Finally, every player who wants to use voice chat must have Simple Voice Chat installed on their own computer. This is still required when the server is running the plugin version. We demonstrate the process using Fabric, launch Minecraft with the correct installation, and join the server. When the voice chat icon appears in the bottom-left corner, you will know the connection is working.
