How to Learn Without a Brain, What Single-Cells Tell Us About Humans // Deepa Rajan  @ucsf

Deepa Rajan studies how cells can learn even though they don't have a brain. Her research focuses on the single-celled Stentor coeruleus and how proteins inside the cell help it to habituate to its environment in ways that are similar to human short-term memory.

Rajan won first prize and People's Choice Award at the 2023 UCSF Grad Slam competition.
The competition challenges PhD students to present a compelling talk on their research in three minutes or less using compelling language that non-specialists can understand.

For students, the contest is an incentive to clarify their ideas and to help others understand and appreciate the significance of their work. For the audience, it's an entertaining glimpse into research graduate students are engaged in. https://graduate.ucsf.edu/grad-slam
