Different ways of training the plants.
For climbing melons, pinch out all side shoots until they are a meter / 3 feet high so that the plant is well established before it needs to swell any fruits, also it means they hang clear of the ground. Melons grow on these laterals, not from the main stem.

Or you can let them sprawl on the ground, and pinch out main stems once you see several melons.
These are Ogen open pollinatied, and Emir plus Malaga, both hybrid.
