Here are a few ways to get foreign currency when traveling: First, you could use a debit card that reimburses ATM fees from international ATMs. There are a lot of great options out there, but this helps you avoid those painful ATM fees and the cash advance fees that credit cards typically charge at ATMs. You could also bring U.S. dollars with you to exchange when you arrive, just don’t expect to get the best exchange rate, especially at airports or tourist hubs. So better yet… you could order currency ahead of time, which is something a lot of banks offer; most people just don’t know about it. But if I’m being completely honest…most of the time, you actually don’t need much cash at all. In over 55 countries, I’ve only needed cash a handful of times. In most cases, having a solid travel rewards card with no foreign transaction fees is much more useful, although that does depend on your destination, so a little prior research can save you some headaches.
