Here is a fairly simple way to etch aluminium. A 12 V battery charger, vinegar, salt, cotton pad, sharp pick or other tool to scribe design with, nail polish to act as etch resist, and of course a work piece will be required. A light etch is produced in 30 seconds, several minutes will give a deep etch. You can use a dremel polishing tip instead of the cotton pad. If the whole work piece is covered with etch resist nail polish, it could be dipped in vinegar and salt solution, the negative would be connected to a stainless steel electrode of some sort, such as a strip, rod, or bolt.
