One of my favorite things about comic-style art is how artists draw lips.

It’s such a simple technique, but the result looks really nice.

You start with a bold, slightly geometric shape then you fill it completely with black.

From there, you carve the form back out:
– erase the teeth
– refine the edges
– adjust the silhouette

+ The shine - Just cut away a small highlight or add a touch of hatching, and suddenly the lips feel glossy and alive.

And just like that… you’ve got fully inked, expressive lips.

Some of the references I used for this come from Dan Mora’s work that I found on Pinterest.
