In this tutorial, you will learn How to Create Low Key Portrait Effect in Photoshop.
Low key refers to a style of photography that utilizes predominantly dark tones to create a dramatic looking image. It involves having a black background and rather contrasty lighting. While this is possible to achieve by proper lighting and camera, we’re going to take a photo that is 70% there and driving it home!
To start off, we’ll separate our subject from the background and painting the background black. Next, we’ll turn our image to black and white by adding black to white gradient map.
Then let’s add curves and tailor it to a contrasty look.
If we’re still not fully satisfied with the image, we can paint manually with a brush over the subject to make certain parts darker and more dramatic. Don’t forget to do this on a new layer!
When done, you should have a very dramatic looking black and white photo!
