Step 1 -- Drawing over the image with the pen tool
Over here, we have an image of a car opened up in illustrator. What we will do is trace parts of the image using the pen tool.
We will first lock this layer and create a new layer in the document. This is so that we can easily trace over the image. With that done, let's select the pen tool and start tracing the side windows over here. What you would want to do is simply add anchor points and trace over the image.
When dealing with curves, you have to keep the mouse click pressed while moving the cursor. It will automatically form a curve according to the movement of the cursor.
Step 2 -- Creating 2D artwork
In the same way you can trace over the other parts of the image. In this case, it's the tail light and the spoiler as well.
Notice that in the image, we cannot see the rear windshield. But since the illustration would be a two dimensional artwork, it's better to recreate it by simply tracing over the background image. This will basically add detail to your artwork.
If you are tracing over a car, make sure you cover every aspect including the front windshield, headlights and the number plate at the front.
Step 3 -- Drawing over the tires
Lastly, we will pick up the ellipse tool and draw over the tire. With that done, let's create another circle and position it in the middle of the bigger circle. With that done, let's move to the pathfinder window and exclude the two circles.
With that done, let's copy this and place it over the other tire.
Step 4 -- Changing the color of the illustration
Once the tracing is done, you can hide the image layer from the layer panel. Select all the shapes and let's change its color to "F15A29". You can now see the outline of the car that we have traced.
Step 5 -- Adding the text
Let's use the type tool to write the name of the company in caps using the "Broadway" font. For the tag line over here, we will use the "Guatami" font. We will position both the texts between the two tires .
Make sure to change their color to orange as well.
Step 6 -- Making a background
Now, let's pick up the rectangle tool from the tool bar and draw a rectangle larger than the shape of the car. Right click on the rectangle, move to "Arrange" and click on the "send to back" option. With that done, let's change its color to grey.
And there you have it. An image of a car has been turned into a vector artwork in illustrator.

Step 1 Drawing a doodle butterfly
Pick up the pen tool from the toolbar on the left side of the screen and from the color swatches panel on the right, pick up a shade of pink. Remember, we are making a doodle over here so details are not important. To start with, make the body of the butterfly by creating two anchor points and curve the path by dragging the cursor. With that done, we will end up with a half circle with pointed tips. Now you can create the other half in the same way and you will have a body for the butterfly.
After that, select white color for the object and give it a pink stroke. Next, start drawing the wings of the butterfly. For that, pick up the brush tool from the toolbar on the left and start making a series of Us followed by a straight line, connecting to where you started from. The lines dont have to be completely straight or perfect.
Next, make the antennas by drawing a spiral circle followed by a straight line connecting to the head of the butterfly. After that, lets select the center body of the butterfly that we created earlier and bring it in front of the rest of the objects by pressing CTRL+Shift+]. With that done, you can add a few details to the object for example, using the ellipse tool and making circles on the wings of the butterfly. The key here is to make the image look as much random as possible.
Step 2 Drawing a heart and flower
Next, we have drawn different objects on the canvas, starting with a heart. For that, choose a less thicker stroke option from the menu before getting started. You can make a basic heart shape on the canvas by making two Us connecting via a pointed tip. Keep experimenting with different ideas for your doodle artwork. For example, we have also made a flower shape by making a series of Us in a circular path, as shown in the image below. You can add small details, for example adding a circle in the middle of the flower to make the base of the flower.
Step 3 Drawing Letters
While doodling its better to draw the letters using the brush tool. So the letter F can be wider as compared to the rest of the letters in the text.
We have also drawn the word Style in a joint handwriting, cursive font style. You can use the paint brush to first write the letter S in capital. After that, simply join the rest of the letters to make a flowing font with all words joined together. At the end, do remember to make the circle over the letter i.
Step 4 Drawing stars
Shape tools can also be used to create a new doodle in illustrator. For example, if you press the shape option in the toolbar, you will notice the star option there. Pick up the tool, move to the canvas and make a simple star shape. Next, duplicate the shape, decrease its size using the corner handles and position it in the middle of the original shape. After that, open up the path finder window and click on the exclude option to create a compound shape and exclude the overlapping shape areas.
After that, you can swap the fill and stroke by clicking on the switch foreground button.
Step 5 Drawing swirl shapes
You can create a different type of doodle in illustrator using the twirl tool as well. For example, draw a simple circle using the ellipse tool. After that, pick up the twirl tool from the tool bar and apply it on the circle. Press the left click and the twirl tool will keep getting applied over the shape. You can move the cursor just a bit to determine the motion of the twirl. At the end, when you release the mouse button, you can see that a swirl will be created over the object.
Step 6 Making a Collage
Take the heart shape and duplicate it, placing it over at the corners randomly on the canvas and changing the size as well.
You can also take the flower doodle, decrease its size, make duplicates and place them randomly all over the canvas. You can even change the size of the duplicated objects just to add randomness to the image. Now lets tilt the text a bit using the corner placeholders. We have done the same thing for the swirl objects as well.
