Checking the internal condition of a chainsaw engine without fully disassembling it is possible by accessing key areas like the exhaust port and carburetor. One of the easiest and most effective ways to inspect the piston and cylinder is by removing the exhaust.
The muffler is typically held in place by a few bolts, and once removed, it provides a clear view of the piston as it moves up and down. By rotating the flywheel or pulling the starter cord slowly, you can check for scoring, scratches, or excessive wear on the piston and cylinder walls. Deep scratches or gouges usually indicate serious engine damage, often caused by dirt ingestion or running the saw with an improper fuel mixture.
Another useful method is to remove the carburetor to inspect the intake side of the engine. The carb is usually attached with a few screws or bolts and can be carefully removed to expose the intake port and reed valves (if applicable). This allows you to check for signs of wear, excessive carbon buildup, or damage to the piston skirt. If the intake side shows scoring similar to what might be seen through the exhaust port, it's a strong indication of internal damage.
Using a flashlight or even a small borescope camera can give an even clearer look inside, helping to assess whether the saw is worth repairing.
While these inspections can reveal a lot about the engine’s health, they don’t provide a complete picture of internal components like the crankshaft bearings or seals. However, by checking compression and looking for excessive piston wear through the exhaust and intake, you can get a good idea of whether the engine is in decent shape or if it’s beyond repair.
If the piston and cylinder appear clean and undamaged, and the saw has good compression, then it's likely worth pursuing further repairs or maintenance to get it running again.
