At Market Overview: Insurtech during Toronto Tech Week 2026, Danish Yusuf - co-founder of Zensurance - shares what 10 years of building in one of Canada's most regulated industries actually looks like from the inside.
Danish started the business on February 29th, 2016. One contract with one insurer took 18 months. Lloyd's coverholder status took two years. Getting one agent licensed means nine provincial licences. Every service provider they trusted โ payment processing, premium financing, claims - eventually broke under the volume. So they built it themselves. Every time they replaced a partner, they absorbed the margin.
The result: 350 employees, 200 licensed brokers holding 1,800 licences, proprietary compliance software, and one million business insurance quotes issued - just this past Sunday before this talk.
The lesson isn't that regulated industries are hard. It's that the ones who stay the course inherit a business nobody else can catch. Many of their competitors shut down and moved on. Zensurance didn't.
Essential viewing for founders building in regulated industries, operators thinking about vertical integration, and anyone who has been told their category is too slow to build a real business in.
