In this video Maxx discusses physical consent at larps and shows a simple way to build a larp wand or spell striker that some larps use to prevent this from needing to occur, at least while casting spells.
I personally do not like others touching me. Sword strikes and spell packets are fine, but hugging, grabbing and restraining are not. Some games allow all of these things and you agree to the consent by playing, or signing paperwork at the game start. However, I have seen this abused at games and cause issues. So, if there is a system to avoid altercations like this, why not initiate it?
For comment discussion, I will say there are times when physical contact may be required or warranted for the game, but it's easy to ask for permission, in character, to do something like that. This apparatus (wand), bypasses an active game mechanic that is run into frequently though from creating these issues.
I hope it's something that is considered and if your game doesn't do something like this, you can always suggest it be implemented if you'd like. And of course create your own rules on safety and creation of the wands that fits your game style. My suggestion is that if it's an item that will be out during combat, it should adhere to whatever rules you have for small boffer weapons, because there is potential for someone to get hit, or run into it. The rules I read for safety in my research had people using all kinds of items, from nice looking latex boffer style wands to wooden wands. I feel some games should revisit their safety section, because a 6'3" person holding an arm out in combat, pointing with a dowel rod in the dark, is just a matter of time before something bad happens. But if they're holding a hollow or solid foam version of that same wand, it probably won't be an issue.
