In this video I will show you how to build the heat set press I designed to embed threaded brass inserts into 3D printed plastic parts. The purpose of using threaded brass inserts is to increase the strength of the threaded screw connection of the part. The plastic is melted around the brass insert and the tear out strength is increased. Additionally, the metal insert makes threading bolts/screws easier and there is less of a chance of damaging the plastic part if the bolt/screw is frequently used.

The entire build is centered around a 25 series piece of aluminum extrusion from 8020. This versatile T-slot profile gives us endless possibilities to design around.

The brass inserts and the kit I used can be found here:

If you search "heat set inserts" on google you will also find more sources for similar items!

There are several 3D printed parts to print. I would recommend using something like PETG that should last longer than PLA. PLA will work, but over time it is known to creep and your parts may start to sag, especially if you leave the soldering iron installed in the arm for years to come.

All of the 3D printed parts along with the bill of materials and a PDF drawing can be found on my Thingiverse page here:

As always, if you have any questions or comments, please leave them below! I try to answer every single question!
